Houston-Burguillos Sixth Grade Pen Pals

Pen pal exchanges throughout the world have been proven to have many benefits for students. Some of the advantages of being able to write to an international friend are that they encourage students to hear about other perspectives. In turn, they begin to become aware of other cultures, economies, history and geography about the communities and countries involved. Students also become aware about the importance of developing and knowing a second or foreign language. Delayed gratification seems to be no longer an option in this high tech world we live in, however nothing gives students more pleasure than ultimately receiving a hand-written letter from someone their own age, many miles apart from their homes, even if they have to wait a couple of weeks for them.

Pershing Students

Positive affective attributes increase when personal, international bonds are created. It has always been the case when students find things relevant to them. Students usually find themselves with some of the same ideas, interests and feelings.
The students participating in this program will expand their horizons and hopefully think about the world as a whole. A global community is taking place.
Our communities are quite different and this brings about a wonderful new arena of learning for all. Burguillos del Cerro, Spain is a rural town of about 3,200 inhabitants. Inversely, our school alone has a population of about 1,500 students with the metropolis of Houston having roughly about 2.622 million people, and is the 4th largest city in the USA.

Therefore, I once again will be collaborating with Ms Alejandra Guerrero of CEIP Nuestra Señera de Guadalupe in Burguillos del Cerro, Spain.

Twenty seven of Pershing students and twenty seven of Colegio Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe's students have begun to write and exchange letters and interests.

We hope our students will enjoy, learn, and build friendships during the rest of the school year.

As a final note, Ms. Guerrero and I will also collaborate on a few projects with the students this year. We will certainly write about them in future posts.

  1. PROYECTO EXTREMADURA

HOUSTON- BURGUILLOS AMIGOS POR CORRESPONDENCIA DE 6º GRADO.

I think that this is a very great opportunity for the kids in this program. They will get to learn new things about each others cultures, schools, etc. The students will actually get a chance to practice the language they are learning. They will actually get an opportunity to have an experience most people can't get, through their daily life. The kids will probably know each other for a long time and can actually communicate with people from another country than their own. It will be an experience to remember for all of them. Overall, I think that this is a very good program.

  4. Giving me the opportunity to write to someone in a whole other country has taught me so much already; not only about how to speak the Spanish language, but I realized there are people that share the same interest as me on the other side of the world. I've learned a lot about what people in Spain prefer to do during their free time, and in exchange, they've learn a little about what I like to do. Writing to my pen pal has showed me that there's so much more to the world than what goes on in our cell phones. This has definitely defined me as a more open-minded, considerate, and inquiring person. And to top things off, I get the chance to teach my pen pal English and how we do it in Texas! I want to do something about the people who don't get this amazing opportunity that I have. I want to be able to show them that there are bigger things out there. In conclusion, I have appreciated reading about this.

  5. I did not know what penpals were until last year, when I was chosen to write to one in Spain. Now, in 8th grade, I also have a penpal that I have gotten in contact with. I think the idea of having someone from a totally different way of life contacting you is a thing that can change anybody's way of thinking. In this century we are lucky to have an easier way to converse and communicate with people that speak a different language and follow certain traditions that, until now, I hadn't even heard of. The children in Burguillos aren't exposed to the amount of people or the way of living that we encounter everyday which makes the interaction with them much more special. I could talk about the weather, holidays, foods, or even my family to my penpal when I couldn't talk about these things with a friend because it wouldn't be an interesting conversation to keep. Most importantly, the outcome of these interactions can aid us in everyday difficulties that normally wouldn't of been accomplished before having a penpal that's in a different continent.
